1957 Mercedes-Benz at Alila Luang Prabang

by Josiah on October 29, 2010

I’m a big fan of creative hotel transport, and Lucy shared her experience at Alila Luang Prabang on the Mr & Mrs Smith blog:

Nothing says ‘making an entrance’ quite like a vintage Merc. I’m instantly wowed on arrival at Luang Prabang’s petite, palm-fringed airport, where I’m met by a cream 1957 Mercedes-Benz (complete with maroon leather interior and chauffeur) for the 10-minute transfer to my luxe-for-less Laotian abode: the brand new Alila Luang Prabang boutique hotel.

Guests of the Six Senses Hideaway at Zighy Bay in Oman can arrive at the hotel from the airport three different ways: By speedboat, by Jeep, or by strapping yourself to a professional paraglider and soaring to the resort’s front steps from a nearby cliff.

Looks fun!

The Stafford Hotel London recently rolled out the Baggage Emergency Response Squad to help guests whose luggage winds up lost on the flight over. The hotel provides the guest with a complimentary “first aid kit” containing toiletries, wool socks, and packaged “knickers.”

From their press release:

It’s an all too familiar occurrence: a weary traveller steps off the plane and walks to the baggage claim only to find their luggage didn’t arrive with them despite paying a significant checking fee. Recognizing the stress that ultimately ensues, The Stafford London by Kempinski has implemented a new army of knights in shining armor ready to come to each frazzled traveller’s rescue.
The hotel’s “Baggage Emergency Response Squad” is on call 24-hours a day, eager to bring guests peace of mind by alleviating the headaches that come with misplaced luggage. Lead by Assistant Head Concierge, Peter Knell (boasting 15 years experience as a concierge in London), this elite team springs into action the moment a guest walks in the door sans bags with a three-step operation:
1. Immediate First Aid – Upon arrival, guests receive their own “First Aid Kit.” These customized, complimentary packs are stocked with essential personal items and are tailored for both men and women. They include:
• Packaged “knickers” from fine English retailers Turnbull & Asser or Rigby & Peller
• Pair of wool socks from the Jermyn Street establishment New & Lingwood
• Customized Stafford teddy bear for children who may have stowed teddy away
• The hotel’s signature Floris bath products with additional necessities  including a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, and contact solution

2. Hostage Negotiations – While the guest is relaxing in the comfort of their suite, the squad will consult with the airlines on the guest’s behalf to ensure expedited arrival of the detained luggage.

3. Quick Cleanup – To ensure guests have a fresh start the next day, the squad can also provide fast, complimentary laundering of arrival clothes. Immediate shopping on behalf of the guest to replace necessary items such as a suit for the next’s day’s business meeting can also be arranged; all items can be provided within two hours pending time of day (additional costs may apply*).

guitar hotel amenity

Guests at the Hard Rock Hotel Chicago can borrow one of 17 electric and acoustic Gibson guitars. And it’s all free: There’s no charge and no limit on rental period. For those that need to brush up, a 70-minute tutorial is available on guestroom televisions or the hotel can arrange a private or group lesson with Guitar Chicago. Fellow guests don’t have to worry about the noise: headphones are included, so the sound won’t travel.
